Bedroom furniture – How much should you spend on Beds?

Some friends of mine are to be married soon and are setting up their first home together. Last week they had their offer for the house they want accepted. They are very excited about fitting out the house and gardens and so they invited a few friends round to dinner at a local restaurant to canvass opinions on what they should do. They brought pictures of the house and garden to dinner and we all came up with ideas for them. They were looking to improve the garden my advice was to lay out pretty and easy to maintain beds of flowers and grass, I argued that as they both work easy maintenance was what they should look for. We discussed what to spend on furniture for the house, they are fortunate in that the kitchen and bathrooms of their new home are already well fitted out so they can concentrate on the lounge, dining and bedrooms. They also wanted to set up one room as a working study to do computer work in. I suggested here that they get a comfortable office chair with a good big table with room for both computer and printer and a good wooden filing cabinet, for computer consumables storage space. As for the other rooms of the house my advice was that whilst there is a tendency to concentrate spending on the public rooms in the home they should plan on spending enough on the bedrooms to make them comfortable, good carpets and especially curtains are necessary, most of all chose good beds with good mattresses.

A good mattress is a large investment but will pay for itself over time, as will good beds. As for where to buy furniture I suggested they went to the high street and the out of town stores to select what they might like but consider actually buying online. It seems possible to get very good deals on most household furniture by careful buying online. Beds and mattresses seem especially keenly priced on the Internet at the moment. We agreed that selecting and buying beds and mattresses would not be a problem. Although curtains and carpets might be easier still to select as the present house owners had not been long in the house and had offered to sell all existing nearly new curtains and carpets at a good price as they were leaving the country and could not easily take the carpets and curtains with them. If my friends bought the curtains and carpets that would help in that they would have more money to spend on the furniture, than if they had to buy carpets and curtains new. They wanted to paint the interior of the house when they had decided on curtains and carpets so as the dinner party split up I and two other friends offered to help them do the painting one weekend next month, when they hope that the legal work will be completed.
